The name refers to the principle of the "black market". The goods to be exchanged are cultural values. The "negotiation" of "value" and "exchange value" are the overall contents of the activities of the events of the principle "Black Market". A basic pattern is that there should be no fixed structures, as everything is in exchange and everything is in relation to each other. The meetings of "BLACK MARKET INTERNATIONAL" as a mental network can be seen as utopia. A "constant conception", of whatever kind, of social, cultural and aesthetic relations.
This utopian principle first became publicly active in 1986 and was shown in a 24-hour performance at documenta 8 in 1987. Performances took place at EXPO 2000 in Hanover and at almost every major performance festival in the world, from Venice to Singapore.
Since then, more than 150 artists and theorists have contributed to the principle of "Black Market". The spectrum ranges from dance, theatre, visual arts and art history to systems theory. It is a coming together that the actors call "encounter". In this encounter lie worldwide networks and temporary communities. A model that is discarded after each realisation and redesigned for each encounter.
